Gyeongju and Busan sit close together in Korea's southeast, which makes them the easiest pair to combine on one trip from Seoul. Gyeongju is a thousand-year-old capital that people call "a museum without walls," and Busan is the big, loud coastal city an hour down the line. Run them as a single loop and you barely backtrack. Here's a 5-day plan that's relaxed but doesn't waste days.
The shape of the trip: Seoul to Gyeongju by KTX, Gyeongju to Busan by KTX (about 30 minutes), then fly or train home. Doing several train legs? Price out the foreigner-only KR Pass before buying single tickets.
Day 1: Seoul to Gyeongju
Catch a morning KTX from Seoul to Singyeongju Station, roughly 2 hours. Drop your bags, then head straight to Bulguksa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and climb to the Seokguram Grotto above it if you have the daylight. Eat dinner near the historic center and turn in early. You've earned an easy night.
Day 2: Gyeongju's historic core
- Daereungwon Tomb Complex: grassy royal burial mounds you can walk among, including Cheonmachong, which you can go inside.
- Cheomseongdae: one of the oldest surviving astronomical observatories in the world, dating to the 7th century.
- Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond: skip it in daylight and come back after dark. The lit-up reflection on the water is the photo everyone takes home.
Gyeongju is compact and flat. Rent a bike or use the local buses and the whole day stays easy.
Day 3: Gyeongju to Busan
The KTX between the two cities runs about 30 minutes, so you keep nearly the whole day. Arrive in Busan, check in, and go straight for the coast: Haeundae Beach in the afternoon, then Gwangalli Beach in the evening for the lit-up Gwangan Bridge and a strip of cafes and bars that runs late.

Day 4: Classic Busan
- Gamcheon Culture Village: a hillside maze of pastel houses, murals and tiny galleries. Go early, before the tour groups.
- Jagalchi Market: Korea's largest seafood market. Pick something fresh downstairs and have it cooked upstairs.
- Nampo and BIFF Square: street food and shopping in the old downtown.
- Songdo Beach cable car or Huinnyeoul Culture Village for sunset coastline views. Pick one; both in an afternoon is a stretch.
Day 5: Sea temple, then home
Start at Haedong Yonggungsa, a Buddhist temple built onto the rocks right over the water, which is rare in Korea. Then take the KTX back to Seoul (about 2h40m), or fly out of Gimhae if that fits your onward plans better. With a late departure, add a coffee run through Jeonpo or one more market.
Practical tips
- Stays: base near Haeundae or Seomyeon in Busan for transport and nightlife, and near the historic center in Gyeongju.
- Luggage: KTX trains and stations have elevators, but pack light. You'll change hotels twice.
- Booking: reserve weekend and holiday KTX seats early. They do sell out.
