Andong is a quiet inland city in North Gyeongsang where old Confucian Korea still runs the calendar. The UNESCO-listed Hahoe Folk Village sits in a loop of the Nakdong River, its thatched and tiled houses lived in rather than staged, and the town's mask dance and Andong jjimdak (braised chicken) are worth the trip well inland on their own. It's far enough off the usual Seoul-Busan track that most foreign visitors skip it, which is part of the pleasure.
What to see and do
- Hahoe Folk Village (UNESCO) — a working village of thatched and tiled houses in a river bend, and the home of the mask traditions. Families still live here, so wander quietly.
- Hahoe Mask Dance — satirical folk theatre with a bite, performed on weekends in season. It's one of Korea's oldest living performing arts, and the humor still lands.
- Byeongsan Seowon — a Confucian academy (also UNESCO) whose Mandaeru pavilion looks straight out over the river. Go for the view from the wooden floor.
- Woryeonggyo Bridge — Korea's longest wooden footbridge, lit up after dark.
- Dosan Seowon — the academy founded by the scholar Toegye, whose face is on the 1,000-won note.
What to eat
The dish people come for is jjimdak: soy-braised chicken with glass noodles and vegetables, sweet, savory and made for sharing. Also try heotjesabap, a mild "mock ritual" bibimbap descended from ancestral rites, and the strong traditional Andong soju if you want to know what the locals drink.
Getting around
Andong is inland, so you'll come by train or express bus, then switch to local buses or a taxi. Hahoe is about 30 minutes from the center. If you want to link the scattered villages and academies without waiting on rural buses, hire a taxi for the day.
When to go
The Andong Mask Dance Festival in late September and October is the highlight, and it lands right as the autumn foliage turns. Spring is green and much quieter if you'd rather have the river paths to yourself.
Insider tip
Book a night in a hanok inside or near Hahoe. The day-trippers clear out by late afternoon, and the village at dawn, with mist off the river, is a different place entirely.
