Give Namhae two unhurried days and let the driving be the point. This island county off the south coast is all terraced hillsides, quiet coves and long sea views, and it doesn't reward rushing. If you're the type who counts sights ticked off, this may not be your island.
Getting there
No train reaches Namhae. From Busan or Jinju, take an intercity bus, or drive across the bridge from the mainland. We'd drive if you can. The winding coastal roads are half the reason to come.
Day 1: terraces and coast
- Gacheon Darangyi Village, the signature sight: rice paddies terraced in green steps that fall right to the sea. Walk the village paths and take your time at the top.
- A coastal drive along roads that hug the water. Pull over at whatever cove or viewpoint catches your eye.
- A sea-view dinner near the coast: fresh seafood, cooked simply.
Day 2: village and views
- German Village (Dogil Maeul), orange-roofed European-style houses built by returning emigrants, with a hillside sea view and a row of cafes.
- Boriam, a hermitage high on Geumsan with some of the coast's best sunrise and sunset panoramas.
- American Village or a quiet beach to wind down.
Don't over-schedule Namhae. The drive, the views and long meals are what you'll remember.
What to eat
Namhae is anchovy country. The local myeolchi shows up as anchovy hoe, in spicy jjigae, and in the classic myeolchi ssambap set, which is the one dish we'd make sure to order. Also look for yuja (citron) products, just-caught shellfish, and the simple sea-view seafood spots along the coast road.
Where to stay
Stay near Sangju Eunmorae Beach for sand and pines, around the German Village for cafes and views, or in a quiet coastal pension (guesthouse) for the full slow pace. Book ahead in summer and peak autumn.
How to plan it
- Rent a car if you can. Public transport works but is slow, and the coast is the experience.
- Time the light. Darangyi in soft morning or late-afternoon light; Boriam for sunrise or sunset.
- Loop it. Namhae pairs well with Tongyeong and Geoje for a multi-day south-coast trip.
- Go shoulder-season. Late spring and autumn are ideal.
