Danyang is a small river-gorge town in inland Chungcheongbuk-do where you can walk a cliff-edge skywalk, raft or cruise the Namhan River, drop into a limestone cave, and eat garlic in every form — all about two hours from Seoul. It's one of Korea's better-kept domestic secrets: scenic, compact, and built for a weekend of light adventure. Foreign visitors rarely make it here, which is exactly the appeal.
The signature sight: Dodamsambong
Dodamsambong is three craggy limestone peaks standing in the middle of the Namhan River, the tallest crowned with a small pavilion. It's Danyang's emblem, lovely at dawn and at blue hour, and a short walk from town. Right nearby is Seokmun, a natural stone arch on the hillside. This is the calm, classic-scenery side of Danyang.
The adventure side
Danyang has leaned hard into active tourism, and it's the reason to come:
- Mancheonha Skywalk — a glass-floored walkway jutting out over the river gorge from a high bluff, with a zipline and an alpine coaster (Active Sky) if you want the adrenaline version. The views down the valley are the big payoff.
- Gosu Cave — a dramatic limestone cave with lit stalactites, stalagmites and tight passages you clamber through. Cool year-round; wear grippy shoes.
- Danyang River cruise / rafting — see the peaks from the water, gentle or lively depending on what you book.
- Sobaeksan National Park — for hikers, the ridge above town blazes with royal azaleas in late spring and turns gold in autumn.

What to eat
Danyang is garlic country, and it shows up everywhere:
- Maneul-galbi (garlic ribs) and garlic-fried rice are the local specialties — pungent, savory, and better than they sound if you're garlic-shy.
- Maneul-tongdak (garlic fried chicken) is the snacky version to grab and go.
- Curd/soft tofu and river fish dishes round out the country-town menu.
Pick up garlic and garlic snacks at the traditional market as an edible souvenir.
Danyang rewards a slow overnight more than a rushed day trip. Do Dodamsambong at dawn or dusk when the light is soft and the tour buses are gone.
When to go
- Autumn (Oct–Nov): foliage on Sobaeksan and along the river; the best all-round season.
- Late spring: azaleas on the Sobaeksan ridge.
- Summer: rafting and river activities, though it's humid.
- Winter: stark and quiet, caves stay a steady temperature, skywalk views are crisp.
Getting to Danyang
- Train: a KTX-Eum or Mugunghwa service reaches Danyang from Seoul (Cheongnyangni) in roughly two hours as of 2026; confirm current schedules.
- Bus: intercity buses run from Seoul's Dong Seoul terminal.
- Danyang's sights are a little spread out, so use local buses and taxis, or base yourself near the riverside center.
How to do it
- Take the train from Cheongnyangni and stay at least one night.
- Do Dodamsambong at dawn or blue hour for the light.
- Hit the Mancheonha Skywalk (add the zipline/coaster if you dare) and Gosu Cave.
- Eat garlic ribs, and take garlic snacks home from the market.
- Add Sobaeksan if you're up for a hike and the season's right.
Book your train ahead for autumn weekends, when Danyang's foliage draws domestic crowds.
Sort trains & passes for your Korea trip
Go for the mix — quiet river peaks in the morning, a glass deck over the gorge by afternoon — and Danyang delivers more variety per day than towns twice its size.
